Prepare the Computer for Exchange

Before installing Exchange you must first prepare the destination computer by installing the following Windows components:

Exchange 2000

• Install Internet Information Services (IIS), including
  • NNTP Service
  • SMTP Service
  • World Wide Web Service

Exchange 2003

• Install Internet Information Services (IIS), including
  • .NET Framework 2 (for Exchange 2003)
  • ASP.NET (for Exchange 2003)
  • NNTP Service
  • SMTP Service
  • World Wide Web Service

Exchange 2007

Exchange 2007 requires a 64-bit server operating system (x64), at least 1GB of memory, and at least 8GB of available disk space. These are bare minimums for VM testing. A production server should have at least double the memory and disk space.

Exchange 2007 requires the following Windows components:

• Install Internet Information Services (IIS), including
  • ASP.NET
  • World Wide Web Service

Install IIS

Install IIS as part of the preparation step, before applying any Windows service packs.

To install IIS insert your Windows CD and use the following procedure:

1. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click the button Add/Remove Windows Components.
3. Check the box next to each of the Windows components listed above (IIS).
4. Click Next to install the components from the Windows CD.

Afterwards (re)apply the Windows service pack, if applicable.

Requirements for Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64

If you are installing Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64, you will need to download and install the following additional software components:

• Windows Server 2003 x64 Service Pack 2 (or later)
• .NET 2.0 SP1 (x64) - Service Pack 1 for .NET Framework 2.0 (x64)
• Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Server 2003 x64 (English) or Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows Server 2003 x64 (International)
• Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows Server 2003 x64
