Install Exchange

After you have installed all of the prerequisite software, and you have created a dummy domain, you are ready to install Exchange. Insert the Exchange installation CD.

Install Exchange using the normal Microsoft setup procedure.

Use the same disk letter and path

Use the same disk letters and folder paths as the original installation The default for Exchange 2000/2003 is C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr. The default for Exchange 2007 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server. If you installed the data files and/or log files to an alternate location on the source computer you must use the same locations on the destination computer.

Important: To successfully move the mailbox store, Exchange and its data files must be installed on the same disk letter(s) and path(s) as on the original computer.
Moving Exchange 2003 from x86 to x64

If you are moving Exchange 2003 from a 32-bit (x86) computer to a 64-bit (x64) computer, you must install it on the 64-bit computer using the same folder path as the source computer. Do not use the default path “Program Files (x86)”. Use “Program Files”. For example, use C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr.
Do not use C:\Program Files (x86)\Exchsrvr.

Select the Exchange components

Select the same Exchange components that you installed on the original computer.

For Exchange 2000/2003 the typical components you should select include Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services and Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools.

For Exchange 2007 you should select the same server roles that were installed on the source computer. The roles typically include the Mailbox Role, the Client Access Role, and the Hub Transport Role.

Recovery Installation

If you have already moved Active Directory using UMove, and you want to re-install Exchange, you will need to preserve the existing Exchange site information in the AD database. Use the setup option /disasterrecovery (Exchange 2000, 2003) or /mode:RecoverServer (Exchange 2007) with SETUP.EXE. This skips the step that creates a new Exchange site in AD.

Open a command console and type the following:

D:\setup\i386\setup.exe /disasterrecovery (Exchange 2000/2003) D:\setup.exe /mode:RecoverServer (Exchange 2007)

(For D: substitute the disk letter for your CD-ROM drive.)

Do not uninstall the previous installation of Exchange; simply repeat the installation with the /disasterrecovery or mode:RecoverServer option.

Procedure for Recovery Installation

On the dialog panel for Exchange 2000/2003 to the left of each item is a dropbox. Choose Disaster Recovery for each item. Make sure that you select all items that you installed on the source computer. Make sure that all selected items indicate Disaster Recovery (and not Install). Click Next to continue.

If you are installing Exchange 2000 a message box will pop up: “Please use the Exchange Administration Snap-in to ensure you have a valid Exchange Server Object for this server for which you are running Setup in recovery mode.” You can safely ignore this message.

What is a Recovery Installation?

There has been much written in the literature about using the recovery installation procedure. It is not as drastic as it sounds. It does two things.

First, it tells Setup to re-use the existing Exchange site in the AD database instead of creating a new Exchange site. It simply skips the step that creates a new Exchange site in AD.

Second, it tells Setup to skip the step that erases the Exchange database files (C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\*). This preserves the database files that UMove copied for you.

The Exchange site in AD is located in the Configuration partition of AD. The Distinguished Name (DN) of the Exchange site is CN=First Administrative Group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=First Organization, CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=acme,DC=com. (The DC components of your DN will vary.)

Next step: Apply the Exchange Service Pack
